Distance Education is the use of technology to connect students to instructors and content outside of the traditional classroom. At Roane State we offer asynchronous online web courses, hybrid courses, traditional courses that utilize an online component, and synchronous interactive classrooms known as IDEA rooms, as well as synchronous video conferencing software such as Adobe Connect.
For more information on the different types of classes offered at RSCC, see Selecting Courses so you are aware of the types of classes that are available to you.
You must first apply to become a Roane State student.
Once you have been through the Admissions process and are ready to register for classes, you decide which form of distance education is right for you. When registering, make sure to take note of the section number associated with the course. For example, you could take a traditional face-to-face course (ENGL-1010-001) or the same course completely online (ENGL-1010-W01). It is the section number that distinguishes the type of course you will have. More information is provided under Selecting Courses.
In 1992, Roane State became the first Tennessee community college to offer classes through live video teleconferencing, and in 1996, RSCC offered its first Web classes. The college has continued to expand the number of courses offered through live video teleconferencing and online. In 2008, the college received a grant to add video classroom technology into area high schools, allowing students to take RSCC courses in their own high schools. Roane State made wireless Internet available on all campuses in 2011, and the college has expanded its use of mobile technology to enhance student learning. Roane State created its first mobile app in March 2013.
